Perspective is Everything!

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” – Ecclesiastes 3:11

Ecclesiastes 3:11 offers a powerful reminder of God’s design. In therapy, I remind clients that we are most influenced by our history, our present circumstances, and our future trajectory (hopes, dreams, goals and desires).  Sometimes, our future trajectory is blurred by our present circumstances. And oftentimes our present circumstances are the product of our past experiences. This verse is clear that God has placed an eternal longing and desire in the heart of every human. The deep desire for eternity can create the most meaningful experiences if we allow. It is this eternal perspective that can help us understand life’s seasons and encourages us to view the future through a lens of faith. In a world driven by instant gratification and constant change, this verse calls us to pause, reflect, and embrace God’s perfect eternal plan.

The Beauty in God’s Timing

“He has made everything beautiful in its time,” is a declaration that nothing in life is random or wasted. Every season, whether joyful or painful, is a thread in the tapestry that God is weaving. Even when circumstances appear chaotic or painful, there is a divine timing that brings beauty and purpose from the ashes.

Eternity in Our Hearts

“He has also set eternity in the human heart,” suggests that there is a longing within us for something beyond the here and now. We are wired with a sense of the eternal, an awareness that life is more than just a series of events. This innate longing can sometimes lead to frustration because we are limited in our understanding of God’s greater plan. Yet, it is also this very longing that drives us to seek Him and find purpose in His will.

The idea of eternity in our hearts is a call to remember that while we experience life in moments, there is a greater narrative being written. Our longing for the eternal reminds us that we are part of something far more significant than we can comprehend. This divine spark within us prompts us to look beyond temporary struggles and achievements, grounding us in the hope that there is more to come—something beautiful and eternal that God is preparing for us.

Trusting in What We Cannot Fathom

“No one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end” acknowledges the limitations of human understanding. We see only a small part of the picture, while God sees the whole. In our attempts to understand why things happen as they do, we often become impatient, anxious, or even doubtful. Yet, this part of the verse reassures us that it’s okay not to have all the answers.

Learning to trust God’s timing means surrendering the need to know “why” and embracing the journey with faith. It is about believing that even the things we cannot understand or explain are still under the control of a loving and wise Creator. It is in this trust that we find peace, knowing that God’s ways are higher than our ways, and His plans for us are ultimately for our good.

How to Live in Light of Ecclesiastes 3:11

  1. Embrace Your Season
Whatever season you are in, know that it is part of a greater purpose. Trust that God is working behind the scenes, even if you don’t see immediate results. The beauty may not be apparent now, but with time, it will emerge.
  2. Seek the Eternal Perspective
Life is more than a series of events. Ask God to help you see beyond the present moment and to gain a sense of His eternal purposes. Let the awareness of eternity shape how you live each day, with hope and anticipation.
  3. Trust God’s Plan, Even When It’s Unclear
It’s okay not to have all the answers. When you feel overwhelmed, remember that God is in control and His plans are always better than we can imagine. Rest in the assurance that you are part of a story written by the Author of time.

There is a time and purpose for everything under heaven. Trust in God’s perfect timing, embrace each season with grace, and live with an eternal perspective. Though we may not always understand the “why” behind what happens, we can have faith that God is making everything beautiful in its time. Let this truth be a source of comfort and inspiration, reminding you that you are part of a grand and glorious design that stretches beyond the limits of this life.
